Where to Study and Start Your Career in Germany: 10 Cities and Regions to Consider

Where to Study and Start Your Career in Germany: 10 Cities and Regions to Consider

Updated on 16 Oct 20268 min read

TL;DR

  • Look beyond the best-known study destinations. LinkedIn’s Cities on the Rise 2026 highlights ten German cities and regions with employment momentum.
  • Use the list to discover relevant courses and universities, not to predict a job offer. It does not rank universities or measure international graduates’ chances of getting hired.
  • Start with course fit, then compare the actual campus, language requirements and total cost. The examples below focus mainly on technology and engineering.

Why your study location matters

Choosing where to study also means choosing the surroundings in which you could build professional contacts. A nearby employer or research institute can be worth investigating for projects, internships or a thesis. Its location alone does not establish a partnership with your university.

LinkedIn News DACH’s Cities on the Rise 2026 provides the starting selection for this guide. Kursa has added university and course examples from official university sources. These are starting points for research, not endorsements by LinkedIn or a separate Kursa ranking. Locations are arranged alphabetically, not by rank.

Good to know

LinkedIn measures employment momentum using hiring, job-posting and talent-movement signals. Its analysis draws on historical data through early 2026. It is not a forecast for the year you graduate, a salary comparison or a measure of English-speaking entry-level vacancies.

Compare the locations

The fields below combine themes from LinkedIn’s report with the study examples explored in this guide. They are not a ranking of local industries or a complete list of available subjects.

Explore your options

Bremen

LinkedIn highlights aerospace and defence alongside the city’s industrial transformation. For a space-focused study route, the Space Engineering Master of Science at the University of Bremen is taught in English and covers space technologies. The course has support from local space-research institutions.

Check before choosing: admission includes an online engineering entrance exam. When researching employers, check the eligibility requirements of individual roles rather than assuming every aerospace or defence position is accessible.

Düsseldorf

LinkedIn points to investment in information technology and services. The Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Master of Science at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf is taught in English. Its curriculum includes machine learning and two research lab rotations, which may take place in research groups or company research environments.

Check before choosing: a related Bachelor’s degree alone is not sufficient. The university specifies mathematical prerequisites and grade requirements. Lab supervisors select applicants for projects; a company placement is not guaranteed.

Freiburg

LinkedIn identifies green technology and life sciences as regional themes. The English-taught Sustainable Systems Engineering Master of Science at the University of Freiburg covers sustainable materials and energy systems, networks and resilience, and circularity engineering. Its department is a partnership between the university and five local Fraunhofer institutes.

Check before choosing: use the current course listing. The older Renewable Energy Engineering and Management course no longer accepts new registrations. Similar course names can lead to outdated recommendations.

Heilbronn

LinkedIn highlights artificial intelligence investment and links between research and business. The Information Engineering Bachelor of Science at the Technical University of Munich is based at its Heilbronn campus. It connects computing with technical systems and business applications. Teaching is in English, with some elective modules in German.

Check before choosing: international applicants must provide at least A2 German. English-taught does not always mean no German admission requirement. Compare Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences too, checking its individual campus locations.

Karlsruhe

LinkedIn describes a technology and research ecosystem involving the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and regional employers. For an applied alternative, explore the Sensor Systems Technology Master of Science at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences. The course examines sensor applications across areas such as industrial automation, medical technology and environmental technology, and requires proof of English.

Check before choosing: this is a specialist engineering course with a summer-semester start. Review its subject prerequisites and the application rules for your applicant category.

Leipzig

LinkedIn highlights technology, logistics and automotive investment. The Computer Science Bachelor of Science, listed as Informatik, at Leipzig University develops mathematical and computing foundations alongside software-development skills. It is a study example for the technology theme, not a specialist logistics qualification.

Check before choosing: teaching is in German. An English version of a university website does not mean the degree is English-taught. You can also explore applied study options at HTWK Leipzig.

Münster

LinkedIn highlights the relationship between the university, smaller businesses and a developing startup scene. The Information Systems Master of Science at the University of Münster is taught entirely in English and connects information technology with organisational and business questions. The university describes cooperation with business partners in seminars and theses.

Check before choosing: the course has restricted admission. Read the subject-specific admission rules before treating it as a route into technology from an unrelated Bachelor’s degree.

Rhein-Neckar

Think regionally here. LinkedIn’s selection includes an economic network around Mannheim, Heidelberg and Ludwigshafen. The English-taught Mannheim Master in Data Science at the University of Mannheim includes practical projects with partner companies. That is a documented course connection, rather than an assumption based on nearby company headquarters.

Check before choosing: admission requires substantial relevant prior study; some applicants also need the Graduate Record Examination. Check your tuition-fee liability and actual travel routes to potential employers.

Ruhr area

LinkedIn describes a region combining industrial change, energy-transition activity and university networks. The English-taught Automation and Robotics Master of Science at TU Dortmund University offers specialisations in process automation, robotics and cognitive systems. It provides a course-level starting point for investigating industrial technology.

Check before choosing: the Ruhr area is not one campus or city. Compare your teaching location, accommodation and possible work destinations. Admission without a numerical restriction still requires meeting the course’s academic access criteria.

Tübingen

LinkedIn highlights a research-oriented environment spanning artificial intelligence and life sciences. The Machine Learning Master of Science at the University of Tübingen offers research-led study, including possible biomedical and industrial applications. It is an option to investigate if you already have strong mathematical and computing foundations.

Check before choosing: the university sets detailed academic and English-certificate requirements. An English-taught Bachelor’s degree does not automatically replace an accepted language certificate. Research-oriented study should not be presented as a guaranteed industry job route.

Build a realistic shortlist

Start by finding courses that match your qualifications and interests. Then compare the city or region around them.

  • Academic fit: check degree level, required prior subjects and the actual curriculum. Research universities and universities of applied sciences can offer different study approaches. See German University Types.
  • Language and access to work: separate the teaching language from admission requirements and the language requested in job adverts. Check whether vacancies are for students, graduates or experienced professionals.
  • Total cost and location: compare tuition, compulsory semester contributions, housing and transport. Public does not automatically mean tuition-free. See Tuition Fees and Semesterbeitrag.
Pro tip

For each shortlisted course, read several relevant employer vacancies. Note the requested language, qualifications and experience. This is a useful reality check alongside a regional employment report.

Heads up

A growing regional labour market does not guarantee admission, an internship or employment. Nearby employers are not automatically university partners. Do not base your study budget on securing a job.

FAQ

Are these the best places in Germany for international students?

Not necessarily. They are the ten locations highlighted by LinkedIn’s employment-momentum report, not an international-student ranking. Your subject, language skills and budget may make another location a better fit.

Does the report mean I will find a job after graduating?

No. It describes historical employment signals. It does not predict hiring when you graduate or measure your personal chances of employment.

Are all the course examples taught in English?

No. The computing Bachelor’s example at Leipzig University is German-taught. TUM’s Heilbronn Information Engineering Bachelor’s is taught in English but also requires German for admission. Always check the specific course requirements.

Should I choose a university mainly because of nearby companies?

No. Start with course suitability and admission requirements. Use nearby employers as an additional research factor, and verify any advertised university partnership or placement arrangement.
