Study Animation in Germany: Courses, Applications and Studio Careers

TL;DR

Want to animate characters for films or build digital worlds? International students can study animation in Germany in English or German, but each route has its own qualification, portfolio and experience requirements. Start with the kind of work you want to make.

  • English-taught options exist at bachelor’s and master’s level; not every animation course is English-taught.
  • Choose a course around the work you want to make: character animation, visual storytelling, technical production or directing.
  • Check the portfolio rules, qualification requirements and full costs before applying. A degree does not guarantee a studio job.

Find your direction

Character animators focus on movement and performance; concept artists develop a production’s visual world. Technical artists connect creative work with production tools. Visual effects, or VFX, can combine computer-generated imagery with filmed footage.

Watch student films and compare modules. Look for a course that gives you room to develop the kind of work you want to make.

Compare study routes

These are examples, not a ranking. Bachelor’s courses are first-degree routes; master’s courses require prior university study.

Institution and courseDurationEntry requirements and application
Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences: Animation and Game, Bachelor of Arts7 semestersB2 English, recognised school qualification and entrance exam. Art and Design or Technology. Application instructions.
Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF: Animation, Bachelor of Fine Arts8 semestersGerman, artistic selection and normally 12 weeks of relevant experience. Application instructions.
Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg: Animation, diploma9 semesters from foundation entry; optional additional mobility yearFoundation studies mainly in German; 12 months of relevant experience required by study start. Application instructions.
Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences: Animation and Game, Master of Arts2–4 semestersRelated degree, B2 English, portfolio and interview. Creative or Technical Direction. Application instructions.
TH Köln and ifs International Film School Cologne: 3D Animation for Film & Games, Master of Arts4 semestersEnglish, relevant degree, aptitude test and 12 months of relevant work after graduation. Application instructions.
Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF: Animation Direction, Master of Fine Arts4 semestersRelated degree, German, artistic work and project proposal. Application instructions.

Babelsberg’s two courses require DSH-1 or an accepted equivalent German certificate for applicants covered by its language rules. B1 can suffice at application, but does not replace the full requirement. DSH is a German university language examination.

The English-taught master at Darmstadt lasts four, three or two semesters for applicants with 180, 210 or 240 prior European academic credits respectively. See our English-taught courses guide.

Heads up

An English website does not mean English teaching. Animationsinstitut accepts German certificates including Goethe B2, DSH-2 or TestDaF level 4 for foundation studies. At least six of the required 12 months of experience must be complete when applying. Direct entry into advanced project studies has different qualification and language rules; check before choosing that route.

Prepare your application

Applying with international qualifications

Qualification checks and artistic selection are separate. For both Darmstadt courses, foreign qualifications go through uni-assist, a document-checking service, alongside the entrance-exam application. Babelsberg’s master requires a preliminary review document from uni-assist before its own application deadline.

Check the rules for the country where you earned your qualifications:

  • India: uni-assist lists an Academic Evaluation Centre certificate, known as APS, among the required documents. Start that check early.
  • Nigeria: applicants using WASSC or NECO certificates need result-verification details. WASSC alone may lead to a preparatory course rather than direct degree entry, depending on eligibility.
  • Indonesia: prepare your school certificate and available national or university entrance exam results; previous university study requires additional academic records.

Use uni-assist’s country guidance and the linked course instructions. Passing a portfolio assessment does not automatically establish academic eligibility.

Build the right portfolio

Portfolio rules differ: the Animation and Game bachelor asks for three project-based work samples; Babelsberg’s Animation bachelor asks for at least 20 artistic samples and normally 12 weeks of relevant practical experience. Babelsberg excludes external links, so a showreel URL alone will not work.

Pro tip

Show your process through sketches, tests or technical decisions, and identify your contribution to team projects. Follow each course’s file formats and sample limits.

Before submitting:

  • Check qualification recognition and the exact language certificate accepted.
  • Prepare the required work samples and evidence of practical experience.
  • Confirm every deadline, including any separate document-checking stage.

International document checks and artistic assessments can have different deadlines. Use each course’s application link above to check the next cycle, not an old intake’s dates.

Budget for the whole course

Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences charges no tuition, but a semester contribution is payable.

Animationsinstitut lists tuition of €1,500 per semester for international students from non-EU countries. Check whether an exemption applies to your circumstances. The Cologne 3D Animation master lists €1,500 per semester for EU students and €2,500 for non-EU students, plus a €200 registration fee and a separate semester contribution.

Budget for living expenses and check equipment provision too. See our cost-of-living guide.

From student projects to studio work

Build work that matches your intended role. For character animation, show movement and performance; for technical art, show how you solved production problems. Explain your own contribution to group projects.

A demo reel is a short video selection of your work. The German visual effects studio RISE asks applicants for a CV and their latest reel. Use student productions to develop relevant material and practise working to feedback and deadlines.

Babelsberg identifies animator, director and storyboard artist among its graduates’ studio roles. That describes possible paths, not guaranteed outcomes. Check each employer’s language, experience and work-permission requirements separately.

FAQ

Can I study animation in English?

Yes. Darmstadt’s Animation and Game bachelor and master, and the Cologne 3D Animation master, are English-taught. Their entry requirements differ.

Do I need to be good at drawing?

Artistic routes assess visual and storytelling skills; technical routes can assess programming and problem-solving. Check the portfolio brief.

Does my school certificate qualify me for direct entry?

Not automatically. Eligibility depends on your qualifications and the institution’s rules. You may need prior university study or a preparatory course. An English-taught degree does not remove academic entry requirements.

Will the course get me a studio job?

No guarantee. Your work, production experience and fit with an employer’s requirements matter.
